Project 02 :

Deconstruct / Reconstruct

For my project i was inspired by the work of many artists . Mainly by Van Gogh's Chair , and
his Gauguin's chair in 1888.

Van Gogh painted this picture as a pendant to another painting he made at the same time as
Gauguin's Chair. The paintings were done in December 1888, when the relationship between Gauguin and Van Gogh had become strained, and though as get nothing had been mentioned, Van Gogh was aware of the fact that his dream of sharing a studio was rapidly disintegrating. His simple chair sits empty, symbolic of its absent owner, and is an image that is infinitely sad. It is an extraordinary instance of propelling a most familiar object beyond the realm of still life so that it comes to represent the artist himself.

Van Gogh painted the picture on one of the coarse canvases that Gauguin had brought with him to Arles, and built the composition up through flat, broad areas of color combined with complex pattern created through the complicated lines of the chair and tiles. By including his pipe and tobacco, and his name signed in the background, the object becomes instantly personalized and as such assumes a mantle of emotive expression unconnected to the everyday form of a chair.

What is the meaning of Van Gogh chair?
Van Gogh's Chair with its straw-covered seat is a simple, rustic piece of furniture, reflecting how the artist saw himself, as a modest man. The objects on the seat are very personal, suggestive of Van Gogh's reflective personality: his pipe and tobacco pouch. Smoking was his constant pleasure, helping him to relax.

Why did Van Gogh paint the chair?
It embodies understanding and support, power and status, the creation and taking away of life, torture and execution. Just as the chair can tell us about humans, it can also shed light on the world of things, including politics and esoteric and love.
He was perhaps drawn to it as a symbolic basis for his own representation of an empty chair.
A chair's purpose is relaxation for a person. The painting, with an empty chair, leaves its audience with an incomplete feeling.

Unmonumental
As a doctor , at the time of the pandemic , as all my collogues we faced a lot ; long working hours , connecting the day with night, stress , losing people around , and knowing that we will lose more and more .
At certain point all what I wanted , just to hold my patients' hands , but due to Covid touching was banned .The way we work had changes so much , missing the healing human touch .
PPE all the time , donning and doffing , and always asking myself , have I done enough ??
I wanted my project to express well this difficult experience in my life and everyone's life .

Mask was the dominant feature . We couldn't leave our homes without it . Our faces have become somewhat similar, but for us doctors , the mask sticks to our faces , leaves , permanent dark lines and wrinkles which will never fade .
Suggested titles for my Project :

1. Into the Void
2. Isolation
3. Endurance
